The fruit of a small evergreen tree "Averrhoa carambola" from South East Asia, which when cut across, has the appearance of a five pointed star. The crisp, yellow flesh has an acid, sweet and aromatic flavour which can be improved by poaching it in light syrup. It is often used as decoration, as well as in jams and chutneys.
